Plans to build 38 flats on the site of Bangor City’s former social club have been unveiled by a housing group.

The Deiniol Road site, a stone’s throw away from the City’s former Farrar Road stadium, was shut ten years ago and has remained dormant ever since.

But the site could now be transformed after housing group, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG) submitted an application to build affordable housing to replace the club that was demolished in 2013.

According to the group, the plans involve 23 two bedroom and 15 one bedroom apartments across four storeys.

The plans will also involve improved site access from Deiniol Road and a secure private car park.

The design and access statement accompanying the application, notes: “The scheme will deliver a high quality affordable housing development that will not only help to meet affordable housing demand in the area but will support the local economy and services while providing local employment and training opportunities.

“The new apartments are to be affordable, flexible and suitable for local people, couples and key workers.

“Dwellings will be of appropriate size to meet Planning and Welsh Government funding criteria and will be economic to build. The homes should be energy efficient to help alleviate fuel poverty and methods of modern construction (MMC) will be considered in the build to align with Wales’ innovation policy and Sustainability targets.”

It went on to say, “The type of housing mix is the result of what best suits the site constraints, brief, and local housing need as determined by CCG.

“Materials will be selected from local sources wherever possible to minimise transport energy use and help sustain the local economy.”

The site has a chequered planning history, with a plan for 49 flats being turned down in 2008 but passed upon appeal a year later.

Its expected that Gwynedd Council’s planning department will consider the application over the coming months.
