COLEG Llandrillo students and staff in Rhos-on-Sea and Bangor celebrated St Dwynwen's Day, the Welsh St Valentine’s Day with a series of fun and informal activities.

The student union presidents at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhos-on-Sea and Coleg Menai at Bangor decorated the campuses to spread the love with Welsh romantic phrases.

During the week leading up to the big day, they helped raise hundreds of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support, the Student Unions’ chosen charity for this academic year.

The popularity of St. Dwynwen's Day has increased considerably in recent years: special events such as concerts and parties are held and Welsh themed cards are printed. St. Dwynwen was the daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog and lived on Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey in the fifth century.

Flowers and balloons greeted students in the reception areas, romantic music played across the campuses, the history of Santes Dwynwen was displayed on large screens, and the student union presidents sold Welsh cakes and roses.

Music technology students entertained crowds with Welsh music and songs, while hairdressing and beauty therapy students organised St Dwynwen’s themed promotional events.

Staff and students working in the college’s Bistro restaurant at the Rhos-on-Sea campus designed a themed menu for St Dwynwen’s Day, which included poached haddock and rarebit sauce, and leek and pea risotto with parmesan crisps, while students filmed a range of video clips telling the nation who and what they love and why.

Sarah Wynn, student enrichment officer for Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, said: “Students and staff from many departments did an excellent job of arranging a wide range of activities this week in celebration of St. Dwynwen. We are delighted that they raised much-needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.”
