A PETITION to help save an Anglesey village from an increasing traffic problem has been handed over to Anglesey Council officials last week.

On Wednesday, January 9, Bob Wright from Llanfachraeth took his petition, signed by 126 people, to the Council offices in Llangefni.

He met with Council Chair Dylan Rees, Leader Llinos Medi and Councillors Ken Hughes and John Griffith to discuss the situation.

Mr Wright says that a rise in associated vehicles to the Wylfa nuclear development, alongside proposed council road improvements, are affecting the A5025 at Llanfachraeth.

He added that the village's narrow roads are "not suitable or safe" for the weight and volume of the increasing traffic that is currently passing through.

The petition, signed by around half the number of the people living in the village, states that locals do not want HGV's through the village until a bypass is built.

"The road is simply not up to standard," Mr Wright said.

"I wanted to meet with members of the council to hand over the petition and explain the situation to them in person."

Mr Wright says that the top priority at this moment in time is to cut the speed limit in the village to 20mph.

"The roads simply aren't wide enough for vehicles to be coming down them at top speed," he added.

"That's why we want to see the speed limit reduced and also, if possible, stop HGV's coming through at all, in the near future."

Mr Wright also confirmed that he has been speaking to Albert Owen MP on the matter and has written a letter to the Chief Constable.

Speaking on the matter, a spokesperson for the Isle of Anglesey County Council said: “The A5025 is the current route for vehicles between Valley and Amlwch including deliveries to and from the existing Wylfa site.

"The road has also been identified for major improvements to accommodate the increased traffic generated by the construction of Wylfa Newydd."

The council has reviewed all Horizon documents in relation to the construction of Wylfa Newydd and has sent its formal response, which will be considered by the Planning Inspectorate during forthcoming Issue Specific DCO hearings.

Horizon say the construction of a bypass at Llanfachraeth ahead of main works at Wylfa Newydd has always been a "vital part" of their traffic management strategy.
