A POPULAR young man from Anglesey was left in hospital after he was attacked on New Year's Eve.

The 20-year-old man, named locally as Rui Silva, was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, with a suspected head injury.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Machine Street in Amlwch Port at 11pm on Monday night following reports of an assault.

Rui, from Moelfre, plays as a midfielder for Gwynedd League side Bro Goronwy and is regarded as a promising young footballer.

North Wales Police say that one of the suspects involved in the attack had a dog with him at the time of the incident.

Officers also closed a road near Craig y Don while investigations took place.

Two men, a 30-year-old and a 28-year-old were later arrested on suspicion of assault. The 30-year-old man, who is local to the area, was released under investigation, while the other was released with no further action.

Friends took to Facebook to show their support for Rui, wishing him well as he continues to recover from the attack.

His partner Lara Cain called the attack "disgusting".

"They (the attackers) don’t understand the consequences of their actions on attacking someone for no reason and how things could’ve been a lot worse than it already is," she said.

"They deserve to be locked up and have the key thrown away."
