A HOTEL worker turned carer who discovered a passion for care work after supporting her elderly grandmother has won a gold award at the social care "Oscars"..

Michelle Reilly, 38, was honoured in the Residential Care Practitioner category at this year’s Wales Care Awards 2018.

The national awards, organised by care industry champions Care Forum Wales, was this year sponsored by Onyx Healthcare and acknowledges the hard work and exceptional performances of those in the care sector.

Michelle has enjoyed a rapid rise to success in the three years since embarking on a career in social care at Gwyddfor Residential Home in Bodedern.

She collected her award at a glittering ceremony held at City Hall in Cardiff.

“I was expecting bronze and so it was a real shock but it was a lovely evening and we had a fantastic time,” she said.

“It was such a heart-felt event and lovely to see everybody collect their awards. It really united everyone from the care sector and I felt very proud.

“I wish I could give an award to everyone I work with. They are so compassionate and dedicated in their jobs. I work with an amazing team who all give 100% all of the time.

“We all learn from each other and are always researching and trying to improve.”

Michelle, who lives in Llanrhyddlad, has two children, Leo, 13, and Summer, four. She grew up in Dundee, Scotland.

She moved to Wales 10 years ago with her Welsh partner Oswyn, 34, and worked at the Anchorage Hotel in Holyhead for four years.

"“When I was looking for jobs there seemed to be an abundance of care jobs and I thought I’d see how I got on.” Michelle added.

“I looked after my nan when I was younger as she had mobility problems. I used to help her get ready and prepare her meals."
