A NEW flood prevention group is helping an Anglesey village to protect itself from flooding.

Developing an early warning service is amongst a number of measures taken to help Dwyran which was affected by flooding last year.

Persistent and heavy rainfall contributed to a large volume of surface water run-off and high water levels in the Afon Braint and Rhyd y Valley in Dwyran during November 2017, which caused flooding to part of the village.

The new Flood Partnership Group has seen colleagues from Anglesey County Council, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Welsh Water joining forces with community representatives and local councillors to make improvements locally and help properties affected by flooding.

A co-ordinated flood alleviation response has already achieved many positives with ditches and rivers cleared, drainage systems and public sewers cleansed, tenants provided with property level protection.

More recently, NRW also launched an early warning service in the area, as a part of their efforts to warn residents of high river levels, which could cause a flood risk to their properties.

Members of the Flood Partnership Group have also shared their valuable local knowledge of flooding in the area with NRW and Anglesey Council. This will contribute to work to model the area’s flood risk.

Bro Aberffraw county councillors Peter Rogers and Bryan Owen act as the group’s Chair and Vice Chair. They believe that the new group has provided a vital means of sharing information on flood risk management with the community.

Councillor Peter Rogers said, “The amount of progress made in such a short time is a credit to all involved. This group is an example of partnership working at its very best, especially in terms of getting a flood warning service up and running in such a short space of time. We hope that the action taken will provide some comfort to those residents who suffered so much during the floods 12 months ago.”

Anglesey’s Highways, Property and Waste portfolio holder, Cllr Bob Parry added, “I’d like to thank the Flood Partnership Group for the significant work undertaken so far. When the modelling has been finished, we will work with Natural Resources Wales to develop, and hopefully secure funding for, a suitable flood design solution for the village.”

If you live in Dwyran and would like to be a part of the group, or if you would like to set up a flood group in another community please contact the Isle of Anglesey County Council’s Flood and Water Management Team on (01248) 752300 or email Highways@anglesey.gov.uk.
