THE ANGLESEY MP Albert Owen is calling for a People's Vote to resolve the Brexit deadlock.

In a recent statement, Mr Owen, said he believed the Prime Minister Theresa May's draft deal with the EU weakened the UK’s position and was "not in the country’s interest."

The deal on the draft EU Withdrawal agreement and Political Declaration sets out a framework for the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom

Mr Owen said that at the 2017 General Election he had wanted a sensible approach to Brexit. But now, with the "current mess and gridlock in Parliament" it was clear that a "sensible Brexit" was not achievable.

"The draft deal does not deliver on promises made in the 2016 Referendum and gives no guarantees to the UK’s future trading relationship with the EU. The Political Declaration is too vague; has no substance and actually weakens the UK’s position, " he said.

The Labour MP added: "I cannot support the deal in a meaningful vote in Parliament. I will look at any sensible amendments that break the Parliamentary deadlock and offer improved outcomes for all my constituents; those who voted leave, remain or did not vote in 2016, particularly the younger generation.

"If the Parliamentary deadlock continues we must consider all options; including extending the March deadline or a public (people’s) vote. I feel that it is only now that we have the reality of Brexit before us and the country needs to take a view in a Public Vote!"

"I respect the 2016 Referendum result. Wales voted to leave in principal and voted to trigger Article 50 to set the negotiation period. Failure to agree now will require an extension.

In Parliament, the Hilary Ben amendment will ensure no deal is not an option. We need a rationale response to Brexit and I feel an extension plus a People’s Vote is a sensible response. "

The Benn amendment does not approve Theresa May’s deal, rejects the UK leaving the European Union without a deal, and let's parliament look at alternatives.

Mr Owen said: "I thank everyone who has contacted me on Brexit and will provide further updates on the matter."
