A MANUFACTURER of luxury holiday cabins in Porthmadog has gone out of business throwing 45 people out of work.

Cambrian Park and Leisure Homes Ltd is being wound up by liquidators FRP Advisory of Leicester. It is believed the company had faced difficult trading conditions.

All 45 people employed at the site have been made redundant and the site has been vacated and returned to the owner. The assets of the business, including existing stock, will look to be sold as part of the liquidation process. As part of the liquidation process pensions advisers will be appointed who will review the current pension scheme.

Cllr Selwyn Griffiths, who represents Porthmadog on Gwynedd County Council, said: “We are very sorry the factory is closing it will have a detrimental impact upon employment in Portmadog. Cambrian Leisure came to this site two years ago from a smaller site in Portmadog I will be meeting the owner of the factory building today to discuss his plans for the site, and we hope the owner of the building will soon find someone to occupy the factory.

“I am very concerned about the people who have lost their jobs just before Christmas.”

Cllr Alwyn Gruffydd, who also represents Porthmadog on Gwynedd County Council, said: “I am disappointed at the news Cambrian Leisure has closed and people have lost their livelihood just before Christmas, but it has not come as a surprise announcement because the closure has been on the cards for several months.

“We hope an entrepreneur will come and make good use of the building and create employment.”

Chairman of Porthmadog Town Council, Cllr Gwilym Jones, said: “This is very sad news, Cambrian Leisure was quite a large employer. It comes close on the closure of Kerfoots department store when more than 20 people lost their jobs, and now almost another 50 jobs have gone.

“These were jobs in the manufacturing sector and there aren’t many opportunities for more jobs like these here. The town will be hard hit and every job here is important.”

Mrs Liz Saville Roberts MP said: “This is a blow to the community of Porthmadog, and I extend my sympathies and support to the workers who now face uncertainty at the worst possible time.

“There has been continuing concern about the business’ future for some time. When I was in discussions with the firm, I was assured there was great potential in the order book.

“I hope a solution can be found quickly in order to retain the experienced workforce and suitable location in an area where high quality caravan homes are in demand.

“To this end, I am eager to work with interested parties and enterprises to ensure we keep the business here”.
