AN ANGLESEY Councillor has urged contractors to revisit a football team's pitch after it was ruined last week.

Caergybi FC's Millbank field has been left in an unplayable state after it was damaged by wheels on the contractor grass cutting machines which left deep marks in the ground following heavy rain.

Former Football Association of Wales (FAW) President Cllr Trefor Lloyd Hughes, who also represents the area on Anglesey Council, has stepped in, asking the unnamed contractors to revisit the site.

In a statement made on Facebook, he wrote: "Having received complaints on Saturday about the damage at the field, I have requested the contractor, via the council, to make good the damage made by them to the satisfaction of Caergybi FC.

"I am also led to believe that there could be new contractors soon due to the (current) contract coming to an end."

Manager of the Anglesey League side, Dale Moffat, says he was "shocked" and "angered" upon making the discovery last Friday.

He added the club would be seeking compensation and that he was "awaiting further updates by the council" on the matter.

"The contractors should be coming back to repair the pitch for us," he said.

"The supervisors are going to come and check it out and see what needs to be done before the next step is taken."

Neighbouring club Holyhead Town have lent Caergybi a helping hand by allowing the club to use their pitch whilst the issue is resolved.

They are scheduled to play Holyhead Hotspur Reserves in the Second Round of the Dargie Cup this coming Saturday.

Following the incident, an Anglesey Council spokesperson said: “We were informed on Friday afternoon and immediately instructed our current contractor to visit the field to assess the damage and provide options for repair.

"Some remedial works have already been undertaken and more will be required.

"Our contractor has also highlighted the sensitivity of this matter with its staff in order to avoid a similar incident.

"We recognise the hard work of volunteers in running a local football teams, like Caergybi FC, and would like to apologise to all associated with the club for the damage caused to the pitch."

Despite this being just their second season as a club, Caergybi are currently second in the Anglesey League table and remain one of the favourites to win the division.

Four of the club's players; Liam Williams, George Hibbert, Dave Webb and top scorer James Ryan have been selected to take part in the Ynys Mon 2019 team trial match taking place at Holyhead Hotspur's ground tonight.
