Holyhead port is not ready for Brexit says Arfon MP

The Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament was responding to claims, made by Stena line, that there is "very little readiness" at ports and "anxiety is high” due to the uncertainty surrounding our future relationship with the EU.

Hywel Williams MP said: "Regardless of any technological solutions or backstops proposed by the Westminster Government, key ports will face unprecedented pressures.

"None more so than Holyhead which remains a hugely important gateway for and to Ireland and already faces huge traffic jams.

“The third Menai bridge secured by Plaid Cymru as part of a budget deal with the Welsh Government will go some way in alleviating tailbacks in the longer term, but will not protect against the devastating effects of a hard border down the Irish sea.

“The reality is that any future trading relationship which deviates from the Single Market and Customs Union will require increased infrastructure at EU-Wales borders and will be economically damaging.

"If the Prime Minister insists on dragging us out of these key European frameworks then the only option is to take the final withdrawal agreement to a People’s Vote to choose between what’s on offer and remain.”
