A WAR of words has erupted at a community council which has been accused of “doing nothing for the town in 30 years.”

The extraordinary blast was made by the former chair of Anglesey Council who was attending the latest meeting of Amlwch Town Council in his capacity as one of the three county councillors for the area’s Twrcelyn ward.

But the accusations were rebuffed by several town councillors who claimed they had valid questions to ask Cllr Richard Owain Jones who sits on Anglesey Council’s ruling Plaid Cymru/Independent coalition.

Before leaving the chamber after 15 minutes into last night’s (Tuesday) meeting, Cllr Jones said that he was “fed up” with members “picking on him".

He added: “I’m sick and tired of coming here, there’s something thrown at me every time.

“Nothing gets done in this town, nothing. 30 years and nothing has been done.

“If you want anything done in this town you need to work with me, not against me.

“You need to sort yourselves out.”

Cllr Jones, who does not sit on the town council but is invited to attend in his capacity as a county councillor for Twrcelyn, was the only one of the three ward members in attendance.

His departure took place before a scheduled item on the agenda, listed as ‘Questions for Cllrs Richard Griffiths and Richard Jones.”

But Cllr Jones went on to say, “In regards to these questions you were going to try and shoot me down with, apparently, why isn’t Aled Morris Jones (fellow ward councillor) on this list?

“There are three county councillors for the area, not just me and Richard Griffiths.”

Cllr Aled Morris Jones, who sits on the county council’s main opposition group, had sent his apologies for not being able to attend.

But explaining the town council’s rationale, Cllr Gareth Winston Roberts said: “You’re running away again, but I’ll give you an explanation.

“You and Richard Griffiths are the two members of the ruling group, that’s why questions are going to be asked of you.

“The ruling group make the decisions. There’s no point you walking away.”

Cllr Myrddin Owens rejected allegations that the town council had achieved nothing in 30 years, pointing out to a £30m spend on housing in the town.

But Cllr Carys Cranston said that she agreed with Cllr Richard Owain Jones, adding: “We’re all volunteers here, I’ve only been to a few meetings but everyone seems to be fighting against each other instead of fighting for the community as we should be.

“I agree with Richard, nothing is being done here and I feel that I’m being laughed at for being part of the town council.

“I have pride in my town and I want to develop it, but I can see why people would think we’re ‘muppets’ because all we do is argue amongst each other instead of putting our efforts into the community.

“If we ask questions we should ask them in the right way and people should be treated with respect.

“I’m embarrassed of the way we act at times.”

But Cllr Meg Roberts responded, “We’re having to ask the same questions every month as we don’t get any answers.”

Cllr Myrddin Owens concluded, “With all due respect, I’ve been in a similar position myself (a county councillor) and was asked questions every time I came here.

“Its right that we question what the county council does for Amlwch. There’s a feeling that Amlwch is being ignored.

“I don’t feel we’ve been disrespectful at all.”
