EDUCATION Secretary for Wales saw the new facilities on offer at the new-look Ysgol Glancegin in Bangor.

During the visit to the primary school building in the Maesgeirchen area of the city, Kirsty Williams was welcomed by the Chair of Gwynedd Council, Councillor Annwen Hughes and Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Gareth Thomas.

There was an opportunity to hear about the significant investment worth £5.1million to build the new Ysgol Glancegin, which offers an exceptional teaching environment for pupils in the area.

The project was co-funded by Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government.

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I was delighted to welcome the Education Secretary to the new Ysgol Glancegin – and to see the pupils making the most of the significant Investment and modern facilities that are now available at the school.

“Our aim as a Council is to make sure that children right across the county benefit from first class facilities, and the new Ysgol Glancegin is a fine example of that.

“The school includes outdoor learning spaces that offer exciting new experiences for the children and staff. The school also includes new play areas, and offers a better environment for pastoral care for pupils and families.”

Education Secretary Kirsty Williams added: “It was a pleasure to visit Ysgol Glancegin today to see the fantastic new facilities made available under our the 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.

“By modernising Ysgol Glancegin, we are providing teachers and pupils in a deprived area of North Wales with improved educational facilities that meets the demand for Welsh medium education, and provides a strong foundation for learners to grow and achieve their potential; increasing pupil confidence.

“It is heartening to note that pupils, staff and members of the wider community all had a part to play in designing the new school.

"This has helped to ensure that the new facility is well-designed and safe, and meets the needs of learners, teachers and the wider community; making it truly befitting of the 21st Century.”

As the new site has been built near the old school building that dated back to the 1960’s, the pupils had the opportunity to contribute to the school’s design and to keep an eye on the developments.

Gareth Jones, headteacher at Ysgol Glancegin, said: “Everyone at the school was very pleased to welcome the Education Secretary and to show-off the new modern facilities we now have at Ysgol Glancegin.”
