THINGS didn't 'pan out' as expected when workers at an Anglesey waste water treatment plant spotted something unusual in a sewer pipe.

Staff at the Welsh Water owned and operated works at Llanfaethlu discovered something glistening and which turned out to be a gold ring.

Water workers are used to finding unusual things that have been accidentally dropped down the toilet or sink, and which have made their way through the waste water system into treatment works.

Everything from false teeth, to golf balls, children's toys to mobiles have been found across Wales, although this is the first time a ring has been found at the Llanfaethlu works.

Ifan Jones, Welsh Water North West catchment manager, said: “The ring was discovered during a routine inspection of the site.

"It has probably fallen down a sink plughole and travelled through the wastewater network.

"The Llanfaethlu treatment works only serves a small area which includes Llanfaethlu village and immediate area, so we are hoping that we can reunite the ring with its owner.”

Anyone who thinks they have lost a ring is being asked to contact the company and to give them a description of the missing ring.

Llanfaethlu wastewater treatment works has recently been upgraded following a £2.7 million investment on site to expand and improve the treatment works which serves, houses business and a new school.

The improvements include a new reed bed to filter the treated water that will ensure that wastewater is effectively cleaned and treated to high standard before it is returned to the local environment.

Ifan Jones added: “It’s a very unique gold ring and I’m sure that someone is very disappointed to have lost it. The owner is probably a local resident or someone who has been on holiday in the village during the summer.

"We would urge anyone that has lost a ring in the Llanfaethlu area over the summer to contact Welsh Water on 0800 0853968 to describe the ring.

"Hopefully then we will be able to reunite the owner with this unique piece of jewellery."
