A FIELD on the outskirts of Llangefni is set to be the home for a new 360 pupil  “super school,” with construction work expected to begin in the spring.

In April, Anglesey’s Executive rubber-stamped a decision to close Ysgol Bodffordd and Ysgol Corn Hir, to be replaced with a brand new facility in the Llangefni area.

Governors at Ysgol Corn Hir had broadly backed the building of a new school due to it already being oversubscribed with concerns also being raised over the condition of the building.

But the community of Bodffordd has battled hard to keep its village school open which, with over 80 pupils and close to capacity, also houses the community centre.

This week, more details have been revealed over the proposed new school which is set to have enough spaces for 360 pupils as well as another 90 nursery places.

The site of the school will be a currently empty field near the junction of Cildwrn Road B5109 and B4422, not far from the existing Ysgol Corn Hir site.

The council’s design and access statement, notes: “The subject of this planning application is the construction of a new build 360 place primary school and 90 place nursery provision in Llangefni to take pupils from existing education sites at Ysgol Corn Hir and Ysgol Bodffordd.

“The proposals will also contain upgrades to the existing highway access to the site and pedestrian access routes.

“The landscape design aims to provide a vibrant external space which has been informed by the site context and in turn, inspire the pupils in their day to day activities."

The statement adds: “To achieve this we have endeavoured to make a feature of the established boundaries on site, using the topography of the site to shape the scheme and create an interesting and sensitive scheme.”

If planning permission is awarded, construction could start in May 2019 and take over a year to complete, with Bodelwyddan-based Wynne Construction having been awarded the contract.

As part of the consultation phase before a full planning application is officially submitted in November, the complete plans will be placed on public display.

Members of the public are able to view the plans in person between 4.30pm and 6pm at Ysgol Bodffordd on October 2 and also at Ysgol Corn Hir on October 4.
