A TEAM of young students from Anglesey are set to represent Wales at the F1 in Schools 2018 World Finals in Singapore.

The event brings national champions from 22 countries together to compete for the honour of being crowned world champion - which also brings the added benefit of a scholarship to top UK universities and a VIP trip to the Formula 1 Singapore grand prix.

A group of six pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, collectively known as 'Team Drive', will take on the top 50 teams from 22 countries by putting their bespoke designed race car to the test in front of 45 Formula 1 judges.

They will be assessed on various parts of their work, from presentations and portfolios to engineering design, as well as the all-important track racing, with the cars covering the 20 metre F1 in Schools track.

The team of Elin Pierce, Elen Iorwerth, Owen Hughes, Owain Roberts, Siwan Iorwerth and Iwan Jones have put in thousands of hours of work to be ready for the ultimate challenge of pitting their car against the best of the rest.

"We all aim to pursue a career in the world of business and competing in this competition has only strengthened our knowledge in this subject," said Elin.

"Owen is able to relate the work he’s completed during the challenge to the work he had been doing in his Business Studies lessons and has realised that this competition can lead to a good career in business no matter in what field.”

The 2018 World Finals are being held between September 9 and 12 and once the competition is done, all competing students will be rewarded with a trip to the Marina Bay Circuit for an exclusive F1 in Schools pit lane walk.

F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula 1 team which is commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest miniature Formula 1 Car of the Future.

At the World Finals, each team brings along a pit display, their cars and a written portfolio, as well as having prepared a verbal presentation for the judges. They will then race their car on the Official F1 in Schools track.

Andrew Denford, F1 in Schools Founder, pioneered the competition to engage students in the key STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.

Andrew says, “The World Finals is the pinnacle of F1 in Schools and is the goal for many of the students who compete," he said.

"I have no doubt that all students have worked extremely hard before presenting to the world. It will be a fantastic event.”
