A TEAM of nurses from Ysbyty Gwynedd is joining forces with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru to climb Snowdon to demonstrate their commitment to becoming Dementia Friends.

The climb will take place on Sunday August 26.

The Dementia Friends initiative aims to change the way people act, think and talk about the condition, so everyone gets the care and support they need, not just in healthcare environments, but in their community too.

Delyth Thomas, clinical nurse specialist at Ysbyty Gwynedd, who is leading the team on the climb, said: “I decided to become a Dementia Champion to deliver Dementia Friends sessions in Ysbyty Gwynedd and reduce the perceived stigma that surrounds dementia.

“I’m passionate about improving the experience of people with dementia and firmly believe every person should become a Dementia Friend to understand what it is like to live with dementia.

“Being a Dementia Friend will enable staff to learn what it is like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action.”

Lindsay Jones, Dementia Friends officer for Wales, said: “Dementia is the biggest health and social care crisis facing society today. Someone develops the condition every three minutes and too many are facing it alone.

“We need more people to help us break down the stigma by joining our growing movement for change.

Lindsay added: “Delyth and her team are a great example of how taking action can help to raise awareness and also tackle stigma.”
