ORGANISERS have expressed their apologies and disappointment after a planned summer celebration in Amlwch has been cancelled.

The publicised 250th Anniversary of the Great Copper Discovery - Year of the Sea Arts and Crafts Fayre was set to be held at Amlwch Port on Tuesday, July 24.

The event, which has been postponed for the time being, aimed to promote heritage and tourism in the area.

More than 20 stalls with local artisans, food producers and craft sellers were due to take part in the celebrations marking Amlwch's copper mining history and industrial heritage.

Copper has been mined at Parys Mountain, since the Bronze Age, but this year sees the 250th anniversary since the town's great copper discovery of 1768.

Elfed Rowlands, manager of the Copper Kingdom heritage centre, said: “Due to a catastrophic late decision we had to cancel this much longed for event here in Amlwch Port which was to be held on July 24.

“It is hoped that an alternative date will be forthcoming and. Sincere apologies to all concerned.”

A spokesperson on behalf of the Isle of Anglesey County Council said, “We’re saddened to hear that Amlwch Port’s summer celebration will not go ahead at present. As owners of Amlwch Port, the council has sought to support the Copper Kingdom and the event as much as possible.”
