ARFON'S Member of Parliament Hywel Williams thanked people in his constituency for the support they have shown to refugees during a World Refugee Day event at Westminster.

On Wednesday, Mr Williams paid tribute to Gwynedd Council and the people of Arfon who he says have done "incredible work" by supporting refugees through the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Programme.

"We have welcomed several refugees to our county," he said.

"The work of Pobl i Bobl in Arfon in providing aid to those seeking safety on these shores and beyond should be greatly commended.

"I’m humbled that people in my constituency have extended such a warm welcome to those refugees who have settled here."

Mr Williams teamed up with other MP's at Westminster, including Dwyfor Meirionydd's Liz Saville Roberts, to raise awareness of the importance of the event.

"As we mark World Refugee Day, it is worth noting that there are more than 68.5 million people globally who have been driven from their homes," Mr Williams said.

"Over a third of these people are refugees sheltering in neighbouring countries because conflict and persecution means that it is not safe for them to remain in their own country."
