Schools across Gwynedd and Anglesey have been forced to close today as heavy snow fell overnight in both areas.

The most extreme spells of cold weather in the last five years hit the region as several places such as Dwygyfylchi were hit with up to six inches of snowfall.

Seven schools have closed in Gwynedd as of 7.40am this morning: Ysgol Yr Hendre, Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Ysgol Y Gelli, Ysgol Pendalar (All Caernarfon), Ysgol Glancegin (Bangor), Ysgol Dolbadarn (Llanberis) and Ysgol Llanrug.

Meanwhile, 16 buildings have been closed on Anglesey.

Primary schools; Ysgol Y Borth (Menai Bridge), Llangaffo, Newborough, Dwyran, Valley, Llanfair P.G, Bodorgan, Y Graig (Llangefni), Corn Hir (Llangefni), Bryngwran and Llandegfan have all closed their doors for the day.

Secondary schools David Hughes (Menai Bridge), Syr Thomas Jones (Amlwch), Holyhead and Gyfun Llangefni and special needs school Ysgol Y Bont are also shut.

Freezing conditions and blizzards have struck the region as the weather front named the "Beast from the East" makes its way across Wales.

Irish Ferries have had to cancel their Swift sailings between Holyhead and Dublin today.

However, the Ulysses and Epsilon vessels are running as normal.

Several bus services have been hit due to the weather and all recycling centres, including the one in Bangor, are closed for the day.

North Wales Police are warning of treacherous driving conditions, especially on the A55 and are advising drivers to take extra care.

The Met Office has warned of potential travel chaos and power cuts and are predicting that further snowfall will take place during the week, particularly throughout Friday.
