BANGOR City councillors have recommended that Gwynedd Council refuse development plans for the former Jewsons site on Bangor High Street.

The recommendation came at a meeting of the city council’s planning committee held on Monday, May 23, before the plans go in front of Gwynedd Council on Monday, June 27.

Proposals have been submitted to Gwynedd Council by Hughes Bros Ltd of Llangefni, which would see the existing buildings at Penlon Works knocked down and replaced by 162 student flats in seven buildings.

The proposals also include the development of an accompanying car park and landscape works but despite an amendment to the site’s access point Bangor city councillors gave a recommendation that Gwynedd Council should refuse the plans.

Councillor Jean Forsyth said that the development would not fit in with the Hirael Bay area.

She said: “It is going to look alien to its location.

“Most of these student accommodation blocks are at the other end of the city.

“It is going to cause travel problems because it is the other end of town.”
Cllr Forsyth also said she believed that the development has overestimated the number of parking spaces needed.

A public consultation meeting has been arranged for 7pm on Monday, June 13, at the Clwb Hirael Club on Ambrose Street.
