A BLUSTERY Saturday failed to deter mobility scooter users getting their Zumba fix.

Glan Clwyd Hospital's Disability Resource Centre (DRC) launched it's first Mobility Scooter Fun day with the never before seen spectacle of scooter Zumba in Rhyl at the Events Arena.

The modified form of the standing Colombian dance exercise craze was part of the afternoon's fun, which also included obstacle courses and a race rewarding the slowest competitor, that had to be rescheduled from Saturday, June 8 due to bad weather.

Annette Lees of the DRC said: "The weather although blustery was kind to us. There was a good turnout of mobility scooter users for a first event, and all went well.

"The slow scooter race had us in fits of laughter when one contestant headed off at top speed, but the highlight of the day was our mobility scooter Zumba which had eight scooter users doing exercise and dance on their scooters.

"It had to be seen to be believed, and probably will never be seen again. It was great fun."

As well as the unique take on Zumba, the fun day also featured a fancy dress competition - which was won by a scooter user dressed as a teabag with a china cup and saucer.

There was also musical entertainment by The Mountain Oyster Band, Woteva and The Ghost Buskers at the Saturday, July 20 event, while at the obstacle course engineer Clive Smith was on hand to give advice and guidance to people and hints in the safe use of mobility scooters,

Rhyl mayor and Denbighshire's Older People’s Champion cllr Ellie Chard., who opened the event, said: "I enjoyed meeting all of the ladies of the DRC, what they offer is such a good resource and it's so good that people can still exercises their arms and legs while using the scooters.

"I didn't expect to see zumba or races when i arrived, so i was a little taken aback, but it was great."
