A CHOIR currently appearing on TV as competition finalists will shortly be entertaining an audience in Ruthin.

John’s Boys have recently been appearing on S4C’s Cor Cymru programme, but will be singing in Ruthin’s John Ambrose Theatre on Friday, April 12 to raise funds for Ruthin Festival and the Ruthin appeal for the 2020 Urdd Eisteddfod, which will be held in Denbigh.

After winning their category in the programme aired on S4C on March 10, the choir is now looking ahead to the Cor Cymru final, where they will be challenging for the trophy, a prize of £4,000 and the opportunity to represent Wales at the Eurovision Choir of the Year Competition, to be held in Gothenburg in July.

Conductor Aled Phillips said: "We have been very busy preparing for the Cor Cymru competition for several months and we have excellent choirs competing in the final, but we enjoy a challenge and will rise to the occasion!

"We are very much looking forward to performing in Ruthin to raise funds for such worthwhile causes."

John’s Boys was formed in 2016 to sing at a local event in Rhosllanerchrugog, near Wrexham, but has since grown to compete in major events such as the BBC Choir of the Year (finalists in 2017), the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition (runners-up in 2018) and of course Cor Cymru in 2017 and now 2019.

The choir members come from all over North East Wales, with several successful soloists in their ranks, and some currently students at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

While there will be soloists from amongst the choir performing individually during the concert, there will also be a soprano from Benllech, in Anglesey.

Gwen Elin has performed on stages all over Wales and won the coveted Urdd Bryn Terfel Scholarship in 2015.

"We are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to welcome John’s Boys and Gwen Elin to Ruthin to entertain us at the concert," said Ruthin Festival chair Gwion Tomos.

This year's Ruthin Festival takes place between June 22 and 30.

The popular Top of Town event will be on Saturday, June 29 with artists such as Bryn Fon a’r Band, Candelas, Skariad and Bwncath in the line-up ready to celebrate the 25th occasion the festival has been held.

The concert with John's Boys starts at 7.30pm, and entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children.

Tickets are available from Siop Elfair in Ruthin (01824 702575) or on the door on the night, although prior purchase is advised.
