LLANRUG United caused a major FAW Trophy upset with a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Chirk.

The fifth round clash featured plenty of incidents after a nervy first period, and it was the away side that drew first blood when Lee Middleman found the net after 59 minutes.

United picked themselves up swiftly following the setback and they got back on level terms when Jonathan Sadler netted from the spot on 65 minutes to send the game into extra time.

The hosts started stronger in the additional 30 minutes and they went ahead for the first time in the tie on 107 when Llion Jones converted a chance after a period of pressure, but the visitors managed to send the game into a shootout thanks to a last minute effort from Middleman.

This did not phase the home side during penalties and they advanced to the next stage thanks to a 4-2 victory.

Also through to the last eight are Llangefni Town, who used home soil to their advantage to seal a 3-1 triumph over Hakin United.

Goals either side of half time from Daniel Thomas and Paul Rowlands put the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One title hopefuls in the ascendancy, but after the break saw their lead reduced when Ben Fawcett finished well on 69 minutes.

Prolific forward Harry Galeotti had the final say when he found the target on 77 minutes to give Chris Roberts’ side a place in the hat.
