CAERNARFON eased their WRU National League Division One North relegation worries with a hard-fought 31-22 bonus point win at Bro Ffestiniog.

The result pulls the Cofis 16 points clear of the bottom two and they leapfrog Bro in the process with just a handful of games remaining in what is sure to be a crucial run-in.

The visitors went ahead in the early exchanges when some quick-thinking from Iolo Hughes saw him go over, with Aled Jones despatching the conversion.

Huw James reduced the deficit with his first penalty soon after, but the away side continue to dominate and increased their advantage when Dylan Gwyn evaded numerous tackles to cross the white wash. Jones added the extras.

Bro fought back and notched their first try of the afternoon through centre Marc Morris which was converted by James, but a Jones penalty ensured the visitors had a comfortable lead heading into the break.

After the break saw the Cofis all-but seal their victory with two quick-fire tries from Mac Jones and Gwyn, with Jones adding both conversions, but this was answered with a brace from Tom James ensured a nervy end to proceedings.

Despite being reduced to 14 men following a yellow card and some intense pressure from the hosts, Caernarfon held on for a deserved triumph which all-but secures their top-flight status.

There was no such luck for Llangefni, who were on the wrong end of a 46-20 home loss to Mold.

The two sides are both fighting for a top five finish but Cefni were left rueing a number of errors which were punished by the impressive visitors, and the result leaves them in sixth spot and four points behind Saturday’s opponents, although they do have a game in hand.
