TALENTED junior basketball players from across Anglesey are aiming to conquer the European stage in May.

Ynys Môn Celts' Under-12's side will become the first ever Welsh team to compete at the FIBA European Mini-basketball Championship in Brussels in two months time.

The youngsters, who are currently the North Wales Basketball Association Champions and are leaders of this season’s standings with six wins out of six, were delighted to receive an invitation to attend the prestigious tournament.

They will be competing against teams from Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Italy, France, Holland and Belgium between May 19 and May 21.

Celts head coach, Jamie Thomas, spoke of the club’s excitement ahead of their historic appearance at the tournament.

"We can’t wait to represent our country on the biggest stage," he said.

"We’re very grateful to The Holyhead and District Roundtable for the support they’ve given the club, sponsoring our new basketball kit, which we’re looking forward to putting to use in Brussels.”

The new Ynys Mon Celts club was founded under the leadership of Sion Parry just three years ago and aims to encourage the development of young basketball players on the island.

“Myself and the club’s committee have taken over this year as Sion has moved on to a new opportunity in China, and we’re very pleased with how the club has progressed," Jamie added.

"We aim to provide the best possible experiences for local youngsters to come together, make new friends, and enjoy what is a fantastic and inclusive sport.

"The kids have continued to develop at a staggering rate, we have more players training with us than ever before, and now we’ve been offered this incredible opportunity, so we can't wait for it!"

Members of The Roundtable wished the club every success ahead of the upcoming adventure.

“We’re delighted to be sponsoring Ynys Môn Celts Basketball Club." A spokesperson for the the society said.

"Anglesey has always had a strong tradition of developing young basketball players and we’re pleased to be involved with the Celts.
