CAERNARFON Town lifted the Huws Gray Alliance title after closing out the campaign with a 2-2 draw at Gresford Athletic.

The Cofis capped off a memorable season that has seen them finally secure their elusive promotion to the JD Welsh Premier League, and they were cheered on by a huge following for Friday night’s end of season fixture.

Sean Eardley’s side made a bright start and went ahead on eight minutes courtesy of skipper Nathan Craig, who unleashed a trademark free-kick into the top corner.

This provoked a strong response from the home side, who gradually worked their way into the contest and were rewarded for their improved play on 22 minutes when in-form striker Jake Eyre levelled matters with a fine effort from the edge of the area.

After the break saw Athletic get their noses in front for the first time when Jack Chaloner’s fierce drive found its way past Alex Ramsay on 50 minutes.

As has been the case for most of the campaign, the Canaries responded well to the setback and striker Jamie Breese was on hand to convert an opportunity on 71 minutes for his 22nd league goal of the season.

Despite their best efforts, the visitors were unable to find a way past the resolute home rearguard again, but the stalemate ensures Eardley unbeaten league record remains intact since taking over from Iwan Williams.

Town end their stint in the second tier with 65 points and are seven clear of nearest rivals Denbigh Town, who also have a game in hand as they look to achieve second spot for their efforts.

The Cofis scored an incredible 98 goals from their 28 contests, conceding just 31, and they now face a huge summer ahead of their return to the top flight following a lengthy absence.
