BANGOR City crashed out of the JD Welsh Cup at the semi-final stage after a thumping 6-1 reverse at the hands of Connah’s Quay Nomads.

The Citizens produced one of their most disappointing overall performances of the season to ensure they narrowly missed on a place in the final, and manager Kevin Nicholson will be hoping to put this setback behind him at the earliest opportunity this Saturday when the pair clash again in their pursuit of European qualification.

The tie, which was played at the home of Huws Gray Alliance side Rhyl, was a one-sided affair after Andy Owen gave Nomads the lead on 27 minutes, and this was swiftly followed by a second which came courtesy of Ryan Wignall, who beat Tom Kennedy to the ball before finishing well.

Things got even worse for City just before the break when they fell three-behind on 37 minutes after Michael Bakare was sent clear, and he rounded stopper Matthew Hall before slotting into an empty net.

After the interval saw Andy Morrison’s side book their place in the final when Owen took advantage of some more poor defending from Kennedy to fire home his second of the evening on 55 minutes, and the impressive forward rounded off a sensational individual display with his hat-trick on 59.

Youngster George Harry was one of the few Citizens’ players to emerge from the game with any credit, with the Academy star coming off the bench to net their consolation from the penalty spot on 76 minutes.

That was as good as it got for Nicholson’s side, who conceded another immediately followed the restart to compound their misery when a Nathan Woolfe effort on 79 minutes completed the rout and rounded off a disastrous night at the office from a City perspective.

Nicholson, said: “It was the worst performance of the season and we didn’t play like it was a semi-final. There was no desire or determination and we were outfought.

“Nobody would have expected that scoreline as I thought it might be a tight game, but you when concede first it always make things difficult.

“The second half was just embarrassing, really poor play and it was the first time this season they didn’t follow the script.”
