BANGOR CITY: Nev looks for return to form against Haverfordwest

IT’S said that bad things often come in threes and if that’s the case then Bangor City’s next opponents Haverfordwest County should beware.

Defeats at Prestatyn and a two nil loss at Llanelli, plus the massive blow of hitman Jamie Reed leaving for Blue Square Premier outfit York City, leave the Blues with a point or two to prove.

And boss Nev Powell insists his side of record breakers will do just that at Farrar Road on Saturday.

He said: “We’re looking forward to the weekend’s match for two reasons.

“First we want to repay the fans and second the players want to go out and prove that no player is bigger than Bangor City FC.”

After seeing him shoot his way to the top of the Welsh Premier League goal scorers chart with 17 strikes, Reed’s departure is a nadir in what has been an absolutely superb season for the club so far.

However, as with the departure of Chris Sharp to TNS last term, City officials insist the deal, for an undisclosed fee, was in the club’s best interests.

Powell said: “We accepted the offer that was a record sale for Bangor City and perhaps for any club in the Welsh Premier League.

“It was a deal the club couldn’t turn down and the player wanted to leave to further his career, so he leaves on good terms.”

City chairman Dilwyn Jones added: "The deal we have agreed with York is the best we have ever been able to negotiate for the sale of a player.

"The squad we have is more than capable of bringing honours to Bangor this season, and we look forward to continuing to press for silverware in the second half of the campaign."

A Rhys Griffiths penalty just before the break plus a late Chris Llewellyn strike were enough to win the game for the Reds, and things got worse for City as returning skipper James Brewerton received his marching orders for a second yellow in injury time.

Powell said: "We were disappointed with the Llanelli result but proud of the performance of the players.

“It was good to see James Brewerton back on the field and he gave an outstanding performance.”

In better news for the club, the signing of former Liverpool trainee goalkeeper Christopher Oldfield was confirmed on Wednesday.

Powell added: "We have got healthy competition throughout the squad and had been looking for a goalkeeper for a while before the opportunity came to sign Chris.

“He comes highly recommended and we welcome him to the club."
