Berriew 1 Bethesda Athletic 0

IAN Probert volleyed Berriew to a slender victory in a turgid affair at home to fellow league newboys Bethesda.

The former Caersws youngster lashed home a left-wing cross from substitute Shane Davies to break the deadlock following 70 scrappy minutes.

Bethesda had chances in the first-half with James Whitmore seeing a goal disallowed for a shove.

At the other end a miss-kick from goalkeeper Steve Thomas, which came back off the post represented Berriew’s best chance.

The match opened up after the break with Berriew gradually getting on top.

Martin Ziemann forced a save from Thomas, who was then relieved to see a close range header from the ex-Bishops Castle striker sail inches wide of target.

Probert sent the home bench into raptures with his 70th minute strike and could have completed his brace only to fire onto the bar at the death.

Manager Russell Cadwallader said: “It was a well-deserved three points.

“I was particularly pleased that this match represented our first clean sheet since we were promoted 21 games ago.”
