Disappointing defeat for RGC 1404

RGC 1404 were left disappointed after suffering a second defeat of the season at top of the league Ystrad Rhondda.

Rhondda raced out of the traps to dominate the opening ten minutes, but the RGC defence held firm to keep the contest even. 1404 fly half Mitch McGahan opened the scoring with a sweet penalty as the Gogs began to take hold of the game.

A superb last-gasp tackle from Harri Evans halted a storming Rhondda run on the line, and RGC extended their lead with the opening try, as winger Carwyn Ap Myrddin picked up the ball on the half way line, beat a couple of tackles and kicked for the line, and as he followed up forced a spill from the Ystrad defender to touch down.

After RGC dominated the closing stages of the half, Ystrad Rhondda returned with a bang, keeping RGC back into their own half and opening the scoring with a penalty.

As rain began to fall, the flow of the game became disrupted as both sides struggled to string passes together, and Ystrad winger Alex Webber skipped over a tackle to open a 10-8 lead.

With ten minutes left, the hosts were reduced to 14 men for an elbow, and RGC piled on the pressure looking for a winner. Harri Evans looked set to score the winner but knocked on as he approached the line.

The referee’s whistle was going against the visitors when it looked like Ystrad Rhondda had spun the scrum with the RGC push, and then after an eight yard drive over the line Kelvin Davies was penalised for a knock on when it looked like RGC had got the try their pressure deserved.

The Gogs will be looking to make amends on November 17 when Penallta come calling to Eirias Park.
