ST ASAPH City manager Daniel Brewerton hailed his side after their stunning fightback at Llandudno Albion to reach the JD Welsh Cup second round.

The Saints recovered from 3-1 down to topple their Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One rivals 4-3 after extra time, and the resurgent third tier squad will look to continue their positive momentum to improve their league form in the coming weeks.

Brewerton, said: “Obviously I’m over the moon with the result, not just because we won but the way we won.

“Coming off the back of last weekend’s game we knew the quality that Albion have and knew what we needed to do to try and stop them, but they changed things up from last week, played a different formation and line-up and we found it hard to adapt to stop them playing.

“We had an early goal disallowed which was disappointing and then conceded two goals and were under a lot of pressure throughout the first half. I spoke to the lads at half time and we needed a reaction and to be fair they all stepped up.

“The character shown by the players was incredible and it was a fantastic evening for us. The amount of supporters that travelled up was brilliant to see, and they really spurred the lads on, it was a great game to be involved in.”

The home side raced out to a two-goal advantage at the break thanks to efforts from Joel Lloyd and Dave Maddock, but the away side came out with a renewed sense of purpose after the break and reduced the deficit thanks to a header from former Rhyl star Jamie Brewerton.

Darren Jones’ men regained their cushion soon after when Danial Evans rounded off a fine team move to slot home, but a frantic finish saw City send the game into an additional 30 minutes when a Paul Fleming penalty and a diverted John Terry strike levelled matters at the death.

The visitors booked their place in the hat when Brewerton slotted home his second of the contest to cap off a remarkable comeback.
