CAERNARFON Town crashed out of the Nathaniel MG Cup after a shock 4-2 defeat at Rhyl.

The Canaries were left undone by a stunning second half performance from the Lilywhites, who came from two goals down in order to advance to the next round of the competition.

Huge tests await both sides this weekend, with the Cofis entertaining all-conquering JD Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints of Oswestry Town on Friday night, with Rhyl making the trip to Huws Gray Alliance title rivals Porthmadog on Saturday.

The visitors got off to the best possible start and were ahead within four minutes when a Nathan Craig penalty rebounded off the post onto the back of stopper Jonathan Hill-Dunt and into the net.

Things got even better for Sean Eardley’s men soon after when a thunderous 20-yard effort from Cai Jones doubled their advantage, but this provoked a strong response from the Lilies, who went close before the break through James Murphy and Barry Torrence.

After the break saw former Prestatyn Town star Ben Maher go within inches of sealing the tie for the Cofis, and they were made to pay for this miss when the lively Mike Pritchard reduced the deficit with a well-taken effort on 55 minutes after neat approach play from Murphy.

Eddie Maurice-Jones’ men levelled proceedings immediately following the restart when Torrence reacted first to a flick on before tucking home the opportunity during a frantic spell.

With the hosts now fully in the ascendancy, they took the lead for the first time in the tie after 78 minutes courtesy of a sensational free-kick from defender Danny Sullivan, and the Lilies rounded off an incredible second half when a bursting run from Kristian Pierce presented a chance to Pritchard, who despatched his second of the evening with 85 gone to complete the scoring.
