BETHESDA relinquished their North Wales Cricket League Division One lead following a seven-wicket loss at Dolgellau.

The long-time leaders now sit in second spot after Pontblyddyn leapfrogged them in the standings, and the visitors set a target of just 114 all out after a disappointing batting display that proved to be the catalyst behind their defeat.

Jez Shea and Mathew Buchanan top scored with 19 apiece, but only skipper Jonathan Williams (17) and Andrew Day made it into double-figures thereafter to give them a mountain to climb in the field.

The impressive Sam Williams was the pick of the home bowlers, claiming five wickets for the loss of 49 runs, with Phil Leeds claiming a pair of scalps at the expense of 17.

Openers Sion Francis and Greg Smithies put the hosts in a commanding position with knocks of 25 and 22 before they were dismissed by Richard Williams and Carwyn William, and captain Gareth Lanagan also boosted his side’s cause with 23.

An unbeaten 21 from Leeds ensured Dollgellau got over the line with minimal fuss, reaching their target for the loss of three wickets after 33 overs’ in the middle.

Pesda will look to reduce their ten-point deficit in their pursuit of the title on August 25 when they host Bersham.
