HOLYHEAD Town have strengthened their squad ahead of their tilt at Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two with the signing of goalkeeper Darren Baker.

The experienced shot stopper has enjoyed a fine career at various clubs across the Gwynedd and Anglesey region, and Baker has represented high-profile sides including Holyhead Hotspur, Porthmadog and Llangefni Town, and also made a huge impression during spells at Cemaes Bay, Llanberis, Y Felinheli, Bethesda Athletic, Amlwch Town and Gaerwen.

He was also part of the hugely formidable Glantraeth side of years gone by, and he also caught the eye last season for a struggling Llanfairpwll outfit.

The maths teacher at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay chose an unusual spot to sign his registration form, putting pen to paper on the summit of Mount Snowdon earlier this week.

A club spokesman, said: “We are delighted to announce veteran goalkeeper Darren Baker has signed for Holyhead Town.

“Baker is a vastly experienced player whose previous clubs include Glantraeth, Llanfairpwll and Hotspur. He will work closely with Bentley as we look to kick on in the Welsh Alliance.”

The Gwynedd League champions are expected to build on their exceptional campaign last term as they embark on moving further up the Welsh pyramid, and the Holy Islanders are one of the favourites for the championship along with Glan Conwy, Meliden and Amlwch Town.

They will once again be heavily reliant on prolific striker Asa Thomas, who gets the chance to prove himself in the fourth tier once again this season after netting more than 40 goals in all competitions during a standout campaign last time out.
