A STORMING final leg by Leon Bagnall clinched victory for his team in Prestatyn Running Club’s road relays at Marine Lake.

His time of four minutes and 28 seconds was the fastest on the night, but the foundation for the team’s win had been laid by two of the youngest female competitors, Eve Scott and Evie White.

A total of 42 members turned out on the night, making up seven teams, and though a gusting wind made it hard going around the lake, the competition was better than ever.

The winning Green team comprised Canyon Wilson (5.07), Julie Evans (9.36), Eve Scott (5.36), Evie White (5.48), Stuart Quayle (8.37) and Leon Bagnall (4.28), for an aggregate time of 39.08.

The other team results were: Yellow 40.45; Light green 43.07; Pink 43.39; Red 44.31; Blue 44.34; Dark blue 45.29.

Fastest times: Men: 1, Leon Bagnall 4.28; 2, Steve Forsyth 4.39; 3, Josh Cerefice 4.44. Ladies: 1, Eve Scott 5.36; 2, Evie White 5.48; 3, Amy Reid 6.00.

On the same night, the wind was even stronger for the Deiniolen 10k, which included several stiff climbs.

James Rogers finished 41st overall in 46.14.

With Eve and Evie in great form on the flat Marine Lake course, two other junior women made their international debuts over much tougher terrain at the weekend. Lois Lee and Jenna Bagnall were the first and second Welsh finishers in the World Mountain Running Association’s youth cup in Lanzada, Italy.

Lois was 30th overall in the U-18s’ race in 27.43 and Jenna was 39th in 29.01.

Although both girls said it was the toughest event they had ever competed in, it was still a great experience.

Last week, Lois won the Welsh U-20 women’s mountain running title at the Tal-y-Mignedd race in the Nantlle Valley.

She was running in the colours of St David’s College, Llandudno.

Gethin Evans was the sole Prestatyn RC representative in the Trail Marathon Wales in Coed-y-Brenin at the weekend, coming 76th overall in 4-21.25.

Two of the club’s 'improvers' joined the large field for the Port Sunlight 10k. Katharine Prestwich finished in 58.35, with Bethan Kemp close behind in 60.54.

The club’s trio of supervets - John Hickman, David Hughes and Roger Harrison-Jones - returned to Horwich, where they won gold in last year’s British Masters’ 5k championships.

All three have been carrying injuries recently, so did not fancy their chances of retaining their title.

As expected, old rivals Bingley had a strong squad out and so the Prestatyn trio were happy to settle for silver.

Tracy Colligan did a testing double within 24 hours last week, running the Aber race on Tuesday night and then the Hotfoot up Famau, the first race in the Clwydian Midweek Series, the following evening.

Only three members turned out in the Conwy Parkrun, but all of them claimed personal bests, Martin Gill for the sixth consecutive week.

Positions: 74, Martin Gill 24.22; 109, Andy Clark 25.55; 110, Clare Atterbury 25.59.
