BANGOR City manager Kevin Nicholson praised the strength of the squad as they secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Connah’s Quay Nomads.

The Citizens enhanced their chances of a top two JD Welsh Premier League finish with a gritty display in difficult conditions, and they now sit in third spot ahead of their trip to in-form Cefn Druids on Friday (7.45pm).

Nicholson, said: “It was an important and we are delighted. The players put in a huge effort in the second half and deserved the win.

“The first half was tight, cagey and they had the better chances so we were pleased to come in at the break all square. We asked them to get their foot on the ball at the break while also guarding their direct play and eventually it brought us a goal.

“At this stage it’s not about how you play, it’s about getting points and after a disappointing defeat at TNS last week we needed to bounce back.

“You have got to win the physical and mental battle against Connah’s Quay and in three games against them we have kept a clean sheet which just shows how well we can defend against the top teams.

“It goes down as one of our best wins of the season due to the importance of the fixture and it would have been nice to get the extra cushion but wasn’t to be, but I thought our substitutes were excellent and all contributed to the victory and shows the strength of our squad at the moment.”

A nervy opening saw the visitors miss a number of chances, but City thwarted their best efforts to crucially go into the break all square.

Using the conditions to their advantage after the break brought with it a reward on 51 minutes when an Anthony Miley header was diverted into his own net by Kai Edwards, which proved to be the only goal of a tight contest.
