WITH his side on the verge of retaining their North Wales Cricket Premier Division crown, Menai Bridge captain Robbie Jones has urged his players to finish the job this Saturday away against rivals Bangor.

The reigning champions took a massive step towards their second consecutive league title when they put main rivals, second-placed Brymbo to the sword on Saturday in a convincing six-wicket success.

Robbie Jones said: “We were absolutely on it from ball one to be honest. We’ve not been at our best at times this year, but we were so up for it you wouldn’t believe. Our class really shone through on Saturday.”

With Menai needing just eight points to clinch from their last two matches, against neighbours Bangor and bottom side Northop, just one win would be enough to hand them the championship.

Jones added: “Bangor have got dangerous players, it’s not going to be easy. But we definitely don’t want to take it into the final game, needing a win to win the league. I’d rather get it done on Saturday!”

The Bridge bowlers were is mesmerising form at Brymbo as they skittled the hosts for just 104.

Joss Roberts and Daniel Parry’s joint top scores of 26 reflected the dominance of the Menai attack, which saw Ashley Wood (3-21), Jones (2-23), Dean Harbour (2-20), Dion Holden (2-18) and Gerallt Roberts (1-22) all take wickets.

Although Luke Jones was out for a first ball duck, Matt Bixby (18) steadied the ship, along with Holden, whose smart 60 not out proved to be a match-winning knock, as Menai eased to victory in just 30.3 overs.

Meanwhile, Menai seconds lost by 67 runs at Marchwiel and Wrexham, while the thirds ran out 10-wicket winners at Connah’s Quay on Saturday.

The seconds host Llanrwst on Saturday, while the third team entertain Northop the following day.
