ANGLESEY mountain running ace Iolo Hughes put in a tremendous performance to claim a gold medal at the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships at Glendalough, Ireland last Saturday.
Wales' first champion of the meeting was Heidi Davies (Brecon AC) in the under 17s womens race, with Menai Track and Field’s Mollie Davies taking a fine eighth place in 23 minutes and 31 seconds, as the team secured silver.
Eryri Harrier John Spill came through in second place in the under 17s mens race, while Menai Track and Field duo Cai Linton-Davies and Ryan Cain took 10th and 20th respectively to help Wales to an overall team silver.
A ninth-placed finish from Eryri’s Bronwen Jenkinson helped guide her team to a bronze medal in the under 20 womens race.
The team’s second individual title came in the under 20 mens race, with Menai Track and Field’s Iolo Hughes taking a splendid win after a race-long battle with Andrew Lawler (Scotland) and Killian Mooney (Ireland).
Iolo made his effort on the downhill and took the win by 13 seconds from Andrew, with Killian a further five seconds behind.
His team also claimed a bronze medal.
