FORMER Bangor City manager Nigel Adkins has been relieved of his duties by Premier Leage club Southampton after two and a half years in charge.

Adkins guided the saints to promotion to the Premier League last season, and his side currently lie three points above the relegation zone after they snatched a 2-2 against Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

The 47 year old former goalkeeper has been replaced by former Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino with immediate effect.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It is a crazy world. It is hard to believe. There is no point saying we are surprised. It seems very unfair."

Former Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier said on Twitter: "Best wishes to Nigel Adkins I'm sure if he so wishes he'll get another job very soon, thanks Nige, probably relieved now not answerable to NC."

Adkins lead Bangor City to back-to-back Welsh Premier League titles during his reign between 1993-1996, and was the first ever manager to manage in both the Welsh and English top flight.
