ONE OF the UK’s toughest and most picturesque marathons is set to celebrate its 30th outing this weekend.
Voted by Runners World magazine as the 2011 marathon of the year, Snowdonia Marathon is revered on the circuit as one of the most gruelling events on the calendar, and this year’s edition has attracted yet another field of world class names.
Multiple world champion Anglea Mudge will line up in her first Snowdonia Marathon to challenge last year’s winner Kelly Morgan, while the nerve of local favourite and 2011 men’s winner Rob Samuel will be severely tested by fellow Welsh internationals Richard Gardiner and Math Roberts.
In addition to the elite athletes, this year’s marathon will featutre a record breaking field of 2200 runners, including a few celebrity faces.
Welsh adventurer and TV presenter Lowri Morgan will be joined by ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’ actor Gabriel Cochrane and 55 Degrees North star Mark Lewis Jones, which will surely boost the event’s profile even further.
Race organiser Jayne Lloyd said: "We have so much to shout about once again this year. I can honestly say that in the 8 years that I have been organising the race we have never had so much to get excited about, whether from a sporting, community, celebrity or charity stand-point.
“We are seen as one of the premier marathons in the UK now, and demand for places is getting higher every year. We don't really want to grow the event much further in terms of entry numbers so we are now looking at the experience and enjoyment factor of the event.
“It's also about putting something back in to the local community. It is them who cheer on our runners, who stand in the freezing cold wind and rain smiling and clapping them on. It is they who tolerate the inconvenience of our traffic management during the race and who give us the support we need to make this event work and we as organisers are very grateful."
The race is set to get underway at 10:30am this Saturday October 27 in Llanberis. For more information, visit www.snowdoniamarathon.co.uk.
