BANGOR CITY face their toughest test of the season so far as they prepare to face champions and fierce rivals The New Saints.
The last time the sides faced each other was in April, when TNS inflicted a 5-0 drubbing on Nev Powell’s men in last season’s title decider, and City will be looking to avoid a similar fate this time around.
Both managers have bolstered their squads during the close season, and Powell will hope that Chris Simm can continue in his rich vein of goalscoring form which has seen him score six times in as many games since his summer move from Chester FC.
City will be without skipper Jamie Brewerton, who is serving the last match of a three-match suspension, and Craig Garside, who was ruled out prior to last week’s 4-1 win against Afan Lido.
Last weekend’s comprehensive home win sent them to the summit of the table, and will have boosted the side’s confidence ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash.
In front of 522 at the Book People Stadium, the Citizens put in arguably their finest performance of the season so far.
After a bright start, Chris Jones put the hosts one up, firing home beyond the reach of keeper Chris Curtis.
Jones, Chris Simm and Les Davies were a constant threat to the Lido backline, but saw a host of chances go begging.
City were pegged back on 37 minutes, when a long throw set up Luke Borrelli to volley home from close range.
Despite the setback, the hosts continued in the same intensity, and having built up pressure on Lido in second period they finally struck for a second time, when Davies converted a Jones cross for his first goal of the season.
This proved to be the shot in the arm the hosts needed, and came as no surprise when Jones netted his second on 72 minutes from a Simm ball across the box.
Despite a resolute performance from an organised Lido outfit, the Citizens proved irresistable on the day, and made the points safe when the industrious Damien Allen fired home late on.
