BANGOR CITY striker Les Davies has tipped Lionel Messi for the UEFA best player in Europe award after a final list of three nominees were announced.
Davies joined the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Andrea Pirlo on the initial 32-man shortlist of the award, but failed to gain enough support to make it into the top three.
Davies said: “It was just unreal to be on a list like that in the first place, but I knew I wouldn’t actually win. It’s sunk in now, but it still feels pretty weird.”
From a list of top-class footballers, Messi, Ronaldo and Spain midfield maestro Andres Iniesta were voted finalists, and big Les is lending his support to the man nicknamed ‘the flea’.
He said: “Messi and Ronaldo deserve to be on the list. Pirlo had was unbeaten with Juventus last season, but Iniesta is different class as well though.
“I think Messi should win it for all the goals he scores, he scored something like 73 goals in 60 games last season, and he’s probably the best player in the world.”
Despite missing out on attending the Monaco ceremony on Thursday, August 30, City’s talisman believes his nomination has brought some much-needed attention
to the Welsh Premier League.
He added: “It’s brought in some good publicity for the Welsh Premier League. There’s a lot of good players in this league and it’s good for us to get some recognition.”
