WALES’ young guns were found wanting when France came to play at the final Under 20s Six Nations tie at Eirias Park.

The young dragons struggled to compete with the heavy French pack from the off, and the visitors took the lead through scrum half Eric Escande’s penalty.

Prop Jefferson Poirot drove home the first try for the visitors after pressure on the Wales try line paid off, and France doubled their lead minutes later when Julien Kazubek glided through the posts to leave Wales stunned on 0-17 after just 10 minutes.

The Welsh reply came from two Sam Davies penalties on 15 and 35 minutes, but the uprising was soon stamped out by the French as they dealt a hammer blow on the stroke of half time, with Escande converted his own try to make the half time score 6-24.

The second half started brightly for the home team as sustained pressure paid off with another Davies penalty, but Bastien Fuster was sent over the line on 51 minutes to give France an uncatchable 29-9 lead.

The capacity Eirias crowd had something to cheer when Luke Morgan darted on to an awkward chip to give Wales their first and only try of the night, which Davies duly converted to leave the score 16-29.

A host of home changes could not alter the outcome and France drove home their point just two minutes from the end when replacement Darly Domvo slipped past tired Welsh lines to bring the final score to 16-36 after another Escande conversion.

The result leaves Wales fourth in the final table after their successful first campaign based in Colwyn Bay.
