HOLYHEAD Hotspur gave a five star performance to book their place in the semi-final of the FAW trophy, as they defeated Denbigh Town.
Hostpur gave one of their best performances of the season as they won 5-0, to join Llanrwst, Pwllheli and South Wales outfit Sully Sports in the draw.
It was the hosts who threatened first, and nearly took the lead after 3 minutes, when Richard Owen blocked a Tom Sharples header off the line, and the rebound whistled just past the post.
In a well contested first half, Owen’s well timed tackle set up Mel McGinness whose first time 20 yard effort flew just inches over the bar.
After Ian Griffiths put a free header over the bar for the hosts, Spurs opened the scoring on 33 minutes when McGinness floated a free-kick into the box, for Gareth Owen to drive into the far corner.
The visitors doubled their advantage on 43 minutes, when a sharp one-two between Mike Edwards and McGinness saw the latter break into the box and shoot home past onrushing ‘keeper Gareth Roberts.
The second half began well for Hotspur, who went three up ten minutes in, when Mike Edwards drove his effort into the far corner after good work from McGinness and Luke John Roberts.
The home side continued to search for an opening through the second half, but were snuffed out by a solid Hotspur defensive performance.
In the 88th minute, Mike Kelly added the fourth when he gathered the ball on the left and unleashed a fierce strike that flew into the top corner.
Two minutes later, Curt Williams completed the rout when he finished a cross from the industrious Mike Edwards.
Hotspur entertain Llanrug United at the New Stadium this Saturday in the Mawddach Barrit Cup quarter final (Kick off 2:30pm).
