CAERNARFON fans received a late Christmas present when their side defeated struggling rivals Caernarfon Wanderers 2-0.

An impressive crowd of 723 saw the visitors put in a spirited shift at the Oval yesterday (Tuesday,December 23), as the Wanderers defence held firm in the first half despite pressure from the third placed Canaries.

The second period was much the same until the 68th minute, when Jason Jones headed a Darren Phillips cross across the area, and former Everton midfielder Nathan Craig scored with a diving header.

Steve Smith’s side sealed the deal three minutes from time, when Phillips volleyed home from close range.

Wanderers were no pushovers, however, and created a couple of chances before the final whistle.

Next up for Town is a clash with Llandudno Junction at the Fly Over ground on Tuesday (KO 2pm).

SECOND-placed Holyhead Hotspur continued their imperious form with a 2-1 with at Gwalchmai.

Jay Gibbs put the Harbourmen ahead after 20 minutes, and the prolific Mel McGinness made it 2-0 nine minutes later.

Andrew Sinclair replied for Gwalchmai with 20 minutes left, but Emlyn Manley Williams’ side held on for the win.

The sides will meet again at the New Stadium on Tuesday (KO 2.30pm).

BETHESDA Athletic are hot on the heels of the chasing pack after their 3-1 away victory over Llanrug United.

Andrew Williams gave the home side the league after 29 minutes, but Mike Lundstrum equalised with 19 minutes left.

Gareth Davies made it 2-1 on 79 minutes, and secured the three points with a penalty seven minutes later.

Pesda welcome Llanrug for a return fixture on Tuesday (KO 2pm).

MEANWHILE, Llanfairpwll earned a 4-2 away win in their clash with Bodedern Athletic.
