Mold 36pts
Llangefni 13pts
TWO struggling sides collided in this Division One North clash, and Mold ran out deserved winners.
Mold could have opened the scoring soon after the kick off, after Cefni were caught offside from a line out, but centre half Steve Quentin's kick flew wide of the posts.
Play continued with both sides making good inroads into each other`s opponents territory.
From a Mold line out, the home side took the ball into a driving maul and managed to push Llangefni back some 10 - 15 metres before Cefni were penalised for bringing the maul down.
Quentin kicked out at the Cefni 5 metre line, with the ball coming out from the throw in to the Mold centres, through two pairs of hands to inside centre Cai Edwards.
Edwards took the ball over the line for the first try, successfully converted by Quentin to make it 7 - 0 .
Cefni centre Half Carwyn Milburn then slotted home a penalty between the posts to make it 7 - 3.
An ugly period of play ensued, with penalties galore being awarded to both teams.
In the end, referee Carl Hyde warned both captains that too many penalties had been awarded, the next no doubt calling for a yellow card.
Mold'd second try came when prop Aled Ellis completed a good piece of play from the forwards, with Quentin converting to make it 14-3.
It was wake up time for Llangefni, who came back hard at their hosts.
From a Llangefni scrum, the ball came out and passed out wide, resulting in a Llangefni knock on.
However, Mr. Hyde had first caught Mold offside, and gave the penalty to Cefni, but a missed kick meant the scores were unchanged.
Llangefni turned the screw on the Mold forwards, and the visitors earned a scrum seven metres out after a knock on.
Mold twice collapsed the scrum, and Mr Hyde awarded a penalty try to Mold, which Milburn converted, to make it 14-10 at half time.
Cefni earned a penalty minutes after the kick off, and Milburn converted to bring the visitors to within a point.
However, the visitors seemed to run out of steam as the game wore on, and Mold ran in tries from prop Mark Padget, number eight Chris Lewis and outside centre Richard Hopkins.
Two conversions and a penalty from the safe boot of Quentin sealed the win.
Matters worsened for Cefni when centre Greg Horseman was sin binned for a deliberate knock on.
Eighth placed Llangefni welcome close rivals Bethesda to Cae Smyrna on Saturday.
BETHESDA missed out on a chance to move up the Swalec League Division One North standings after their opponents dropped out of the fixture.
Ruthin failed to turn out for the clash as Dôl Ddafydd, leaving Bethesda without a game on Saturday.
A club spokesman said: “It was a huge disappointment to the squad who trained hard during the week.
“This was a surprising act from a club which has been at the upper end of the division for many seasons.”
Pesda, who lie in sixth, will face eighth placed Llangefni away on Saturday (KO 2.30pm).
MEANWHILE, second bottom Bangor’s Division Three North struggles continued with a 43-12 home defeat to Harlech.
Benllech were hammered 55-0 by league leaders Shotton Steel, while Holyhead’s clash with Llangollen was postponed.
