A PENALTY five minutes from time by Menai captain and fly-half Iwan Jones secured a shock victory for Division Three leaders over Division Two high-fliers and a place in the final of the North Wales Intermediate Cup.
Menai withstood considerable pressure in the opening quarter, and it came as no surprise when the visitors' left-wing Chris Marsh scored the opening try.
Minutes later, Menai's Jones kicked a penalty after Gele infringed at a ruck.
Visiting centre Chris Smith intercepted a wayward pass and sped 40 metres to score near the post, and scrum-half Mark Benton to put Gele 3-12 ahead.
Menai replied just before the interval through left wing Sam Hughes, who capped off a good move to put the home side 8-12 at the break.
After the resumption, Menai began to impose themselves and looking a more complete outfit, despite five players were playing in unaccustomed positions .
Jones dropped a fine goal after 45 minutes to narrow the gap to 11 - 12, but a defensive error gifted the visitors ground to claim a 5 metre line-out from which prop-forward, Darren Peters crashed over for a try.
Benton Converted to extend the visitors' lead to 11-19.With 10 minutes left, Menai struck back as lock-forward Frank Rushton and number eight Ieuan Vaughan took play 40 metres up-field through clever inter-passing and ball retention, enabling scrum-half Vaughan Francis to crash over for the score.
Jones converted to narrow the margin to 18 -19.Menai dominated possession from then on, and captain Jones clinched the deserved win with his second penalty five minutes from time.
Next Saturday, Menai are away to Llangefni Seconds in the Gwynedd Cup.
