YNYS Môn MP Albert Owen will make history as the first Member of Parliament to officially use the Welsh language in the Welsh Grand Committee that sits in on Wednesday, February 7.

Mr Owen will chair the committee and has, with fellow Parliamentarians, lobbied for the use of the Welsh language, along with English, in its proceedings.

Mr Owen said: “I, along with MPs from across the House, support the move that the unique Welsh Grand Committee should afford MPs the choice to debate matters in either Welsh or English.” The decision was made by the Leader of the House in January.

“The Welsh Affairs Committee can use Welsh in evidence sessions, however debate in the House of Commons has previously been in English only and indeed Old French is used in the passing of laws in the House of Lords. It is appropriate that a historic and distinct Welsh Committee is today allowed to use the Welsh language.”

Mr Owen also said the business of the day will be the Autumn Budget as it relates to Wales and will encourage members to use Welsh if they desire.
