POWERBOATS roared past Caernarfon castle last weekend in the biggest and fastest power boat race held on the Menai straits.

The event was one of a series organised by the Offshore Circuit Racing Drivers Association.

It was to have been held at Holyhead, but the storm damage to its marina earlier this year

forced a change of venue to Caernarfon.

The crowded shoreline on both Saturday and Sunday watched 22 boats battle in four 35 mi-nute long races.

Scott Williams of the Offshore Circuit Racing Drivers Association said: “Racing was very exciting and close, with the short course set just outside Caernarfon castle to allow the spectators to see the competition up close with the boats racing at more than 70mph.”

In addition to the races the crowds witnessed demonstration runs by a 42feet long offshore racing rib Argentum, powered by a 1500hp engine, which hit speeds speed in excess of 120mph.
