FIVE Welsh athletes who competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games received a warm welcome from students and staff at Bangor University this week.

The group were all members of the weightlifting team which took part in the event on the Gold Coast in Australia and also work or study at the University.

On Tuesday, congratulations were given to the team of Seth Casidsid, Harry Misangyi, Hannah Powell, Catrin Jones and gold medal winner Gareth Evans.

A short presentation was held at Reichel Hall as awards were given to each athlete, before the ceremonial cake was cut.

Gareth Evans, 31, from Holyhead (pictured with Vice Chancellor, Prof. John G. Hughes) took gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Evans, who works at the University's Canolfan Brailsford centre, posted a total of 299kg to win Wales' first gold medal on day two of the Gold Coast Games.

Richard Bennett, Bangor University Director of Sport, said that the inclusion of five Bangor University athletes in the squad reflects the investment made to support their students.

“It's a huge honour for us," he said.

"The support offered by the academic team at Bangor has given Catrin, Harry, Seth and Hannah the opportunity to succeed.

"It has also allowed them to combine their academic studies with an intensive training programme."
